New Study: Hardy’s Daily Essential Nutrients Prenatal Improves Mental Health in Pregnancy, Overall Health of BabiesWe are thrilled to share some exciting news! A recent study has revealed significant findings about the effectiveness of Hardy Nutritionals' Daily Essential Nutrients in treating symptoms of antenatal depression. This groundbreaking 12-week, fully blinded, randomized, controlled trial known as the NUTRIMUM study, published in the British Journal of Psychiatry, underscores the potential of DEN as a powerful tool for prenatal mental health support. Key Findings During PregnancyThe clinical trial involved 88 participants who were diagnosed with mood disorders, including depression, anxiety, and personality difficulties (i.e. difficulty making & keeping friends, impulsivity, inability to trust, short tempers, excess worry, perfectionism). These individuals were divided into two groups: one received Hardy Nutritionals' Daily Essential Nutrients, and the other was given a placebo. Over the course of twelve weeks, researchers closely monitored the participants' mental health and overall well-being.
Improved Overall Functioning
Compared to those in the placebo group, participants who took Hardy Nutritionals' Daily Essential Nutrients (DEN) demonstrated better overall functioning as rated by their doctors.
Enhanced Sleep Quality
The micronutrient group showed significantly greater improvement in the sleep assessment than the placebo group.Greater Improvement in Depression Scores
Clinicians rated the depression of micronutrient users to be significantly improved over placebo users by the end of the study. Interestingly, participants who had previously tried psychiatric medications experienced a greater change in depression scores in the micronutrient group than in the placebo group. This may suggest that micronutrients are especially necessary and beneficial to those who respond poorly to pharmaceutical antidepressants. Positive Response to Personality Difficulties
Individuals with personality difficulties such as impulsivity, untrusting behavior, and perfectionism were much more likely to respond positively to the micronutrients.
High Levels of Self-Reported Improvement
A higher percentage of the micronutrient group identified as ‘much’ to ‘very much’ improved (68.8%) compared to the placebo group (38.5%).Lower Homocysteine
Daily Essential Nutrients increased blood levels of vitamins D and B12 and lowered homocysteine significantly, reducing the risk for multiple pregnancy complications. High homocysteine has been associated with neural tube defects, recurrent miscarriage, preeclampsia, preterm delivery, partial placenta detachment, fetal growth restriction, and gestational diabetes.Viable Option During Pregnancy
Most women are especially careful about what they take into their bodies while they are carrying a growing baby. This study provides high-quality medical evidence that Hardy Nutritionals' Daily Essential Nutrients is an excellent option for pregnant women seeking natural, side effect-free, and effective support for their mental health. See the study.Key Findings for the BabiesIn addition to evaluating the benefits of DEN in mothers with depression, the researchers looked at the effects on the babies. However, in order to have a better comparison than just the women with depression who took a placebo in the NUTRIMUM trial, they compared the babies from moms who took DEN in the clinical trial to a group of babies from healthy (not depressed) moms taking regular multivitamins or not supplementing at all and to a group of babies born to moms who were taking antidepressant medication during their pregnancy.
Enhanced Neonatal Outcomes
Babies from moms who took DEN for depression during pregnancy were significantly better off than newborns from moms taking pharmaceutical antidepressants on six out of seven physiological and neurological measures (habituation to disturbances, orientation to sights and sounds, motor control, regulation of state, autonomic stability, and normal reflexes). The “DEN babies” even outperformed babies from otherwise healthy, unmedicated moms on three of the seven measures (habituation to disturbances, motor control, and autonomic stability). Optimal Gestation and Birth
Micronutrient-exposed infants were also more likely to be carried to full term than infants from healthy, unmedicated mothers and mothers taking antidepressants. Babies carried to full term tend to experience better lifelong outcomes than those born pre-term. The micronutrients helped psychological functioning in moms and improved birth outcomes in babies. The micronutrients also appear to have mitigated some of the risks associated with antenatal depression and poorer infant outcomes. These are some of the benefits of higher dose and better balance of nutrients compared to typical over-the-counter antenatal nutritional supplements. See the study.
