Tired of trying to find an alternative that works for ADHD? Maybe you’re just not interested in taking the medication route at all and dealing with the side effects that pharmaceuticals often have, like appetite loss or trouble sleeping. You’re not alone.
Families everywhere have been utilizing Hardy’s Daily Essential Nutrients as a safe alternative to common ADHD medications. Backed by over 40 independent studies, including double-blind trials, this micronutrient blend is the most studied alternative treatment for ADHD in the world.
The most recent paper, Micronutrients for Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder in Youth: A Placebo-Controlled Randomized Clinical Trial, was recently published in the Journal of the American Academy of Child & Adolescent Psychiatry. Dallin Hardy, MSc, of Hardy Nutritionals®, explained the results and how they compare to two prior double-blind ADHD studies in this video.
Breaking Down the Studies
Before diving into the most recent study, Dallin reviews two other double-blind, placebo-controlled trials that focused solely on the effects of Daily Essential Nutrients (DEN) for ADHD. The first, Vitamin Mineral Treatment of Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder in Adults: Double-Blind, Randomized Placebo-Controlled Trial, and the second, Vitamin-Mineral Treatment Improves Aggression and Emotional Regulation in Children with ADHD: A Fully Blinded, Randomized, Placebo-Controlled Trial.
The first study, published in 2014 in the British Journal of Psychiatry, studied the effects of adults taking 12 Daily Essential Nutrients (DEN) capsules (also available in powder form) a day for eight weeks.
The second study, published in 2018 in the Journal of Child Psychology and Psychiatry, was a ten-week study where participants took 12 capsules a day of the Daily Essential Nutrients formula. In this study, participants were between the ages of 7 to 13.
The primary outcome in each of these studies was based on a clinician-rated outcome measure called the Clinical Global Impressions of Improvement for ADHD. In both studies, clinicians rated the improvement of ADHD symptoms and in all cases, the results were statistically and clinically significant.
In the adult study, 73% of the participants experienced at least a mild improvement. Over one-third of them (38%), experienced “much” or “very much” improvement, otherwise classified as treatment responders. The statistical measure of the probability that an observed difference could have occurred just by random chance was low (p=0.02), meaning that the results were significant.
In the second study, which focused on children, just over 70% of participants experienced at least mild improvement. Almost half were treatment responders, again meaning they experienced “much” or “very much” improvement. The p-value in this case was also 0.02.
In the most recent clinical trial, 54% of the children with ADHD using DEN were much or very much improved, a significant improvement over the other two studies. The p-value in this case was less than 0.001, even more impressive than the previous studies.
Overall, the studies show us that, as rated by clinicians, Hardy’s Daily Essential Nutrients is a viable alternative to medication for individuals with ADHD.
