With over 40 million adults in the U.S. dealing with anxiety disorders and only 36.9% of those seeking treatment, anxiety is a nationwide issue.
For decades, researchers have worked tirelessly to identify causes and treatments for anxiety disorder. During that time, studies have been underway that just may prove a strong link between nutrition and mental health.
Anxiety, or panic, is identified by the NIH as "feelings of nervousness and restlessness, increased heart rate, hyperventilation, sweating, trembling, difficulty concentrating and uncontrolled worry". Anxiety disorder can be devastating for those who suffer from it. It can cripple one's ability to function in day-to-day life. Specific therapies and medications may help relieve the burden of anxiety, yet only about a third of people suffering from this condition seek treatment.
There are many schools of thought when it comes to determining the root cause of anxiety, but several researchers have demonstrated an important correlation between nutrient deficiencies and symptoms.
One recent Japanese study found a connection between nutritional deficiencies and mental health, revealing that low levels of certain key nutrients may actually trigger the chemical changes in the brain responsible for panic attacks, hyperventilation and other forms of anxiety. "The data showed that those who were experiencing anxiety were found to have lower levels of B6 and Iron than those in the healthy group." Why is this important? It shows a correlation between nutritional deficiencies and mental illness. If a couple of nutritional elements can make such an impact for those suffering with anxiety, what would a therapeutic level of all the essential nutrients provide?
A university research team in New Zealand studied a group of individuals suffering from anxiety and stress following a devastating earthquake. Study participants were taking a broad-spectrum micronutrient formulation containing more than 30 nutrients in a balanced, highly absorbable format.
The supplement is called "Daily Essential Nutrients" and it is available in a powder and capsule form (vegan, non-GMO, natural ingredients of course), and even comes in a 7 day trial pack if you want the powder version. The researchers measured symptoms of situation-induced depression, anxiety, and stress in these individuals, as well as in 25 additional people who took no supplement (a control group). The data showed that 20% of the control group and 74% of the group taking the micronutrients showed significant improvement in depression, anxiety, and stress symptoms. Researchers concluded that this study further supports micronutrients as a practical treatment.
The study authors wrote, "micronutrients are...an inexpensive and practical treatment for acute stress following a natural disaster with a slight advantage to higher doses." For those who suffer from anxiety due to stress, nutritional deficiencies, or other reasons, micronutrients have been shown to be helpful. There are now multiple studies on the micronutrients for mood, mental health, stress, and sleep.
