We all know that consuming heavy metals can be dangerous to our health. But did you know all natural foods contain trace amounts of heavy metals from the earth? Substances such as lead occur naturally in the soil, and as a result, occur naturally in foods, either through soil absorption or as a part of the natural composition of the food itself. For instance, where large quantities of calcium are found in the dirt, lead is there too, and it’s very difficult to completely remove.
In the state of California, the Proposition 65 warning regarding heavy metals is required if lead is present in trace amounts. Consuming lead in high quantities is known to cause cancer, birth defects or other reproductive harm.
In spite of using very low-lead source ingredients, some Hardy Nutritionals formulations such as Daily Essential Nutrients (DEN) still slightly exceed Prop 65 warning thresholds (0.5mcg /day) due to the total volume of recommended daily intake.
Thankfully, however, calcium, of which Daily Essential Nutrients contains an abundance, is known to significantly reduce the absorption of lead and otherwise protect against its harmful effects in the body. Thus, lead toxicity is greatly reduced when it is ingested with large quantities of calcium. Lead toxicity can also be reduced with proper ingestion of iron and Vitamin C, both of which are also present in DEN.
If you order certain Hardy Nutritionals products with a shipping address in the state of California, you will be notified at checkout that the product contains trace amounts of heavy metals in order to ensure compliance with Prop 65.
Despite the strict regulations in California, calcium-containing Hardy Nutritionals products contain lower lead levels than those specified by the FDA and EPA as safe levels for daily consumption. California is the only jurisdiction in the world that considers the stringent EPA standards to be insufficient.
